A Warm Welcome and New Beginnings: Columbia’s Actuarial Science Class of Fall 2024

In the crisp fall of 2024, Columbia University opened its doors to 28 bright, passionate, and curious new students—each beginning their journey into the world of actuarial science. The energy was palpable as students from all walks of life came together, ready to embrace a new academic chapter. The Orientation Week was nothing short of magical—carefully curated by the faculty to make every newcomer feel at home.

The first day kicked off with warm introductions and a welcome session that eased away the nerves. It was followed by a lively mixed social event with the NECR department and rounded off with a cheerful lunch at Amity Hall—where strangers slowly became friends over shared laughter and stories.

Day two was all about gearing up for the future, starting with a Program Career Strategy session hosted by the SPS Career Design Lab. In the evening, friendships were further forged at a fun-filled bowling social where the only thing more competitive than the scores was the camaraderie.

The third day brought a special moment—our seniors stepped up to introduce themselves and share wisdom through a presentation by the former ASCU Board. A practical and inspiring career coaching session with Pan Tang followed, planting seeds of purpose and ambition in our minds.

Then came the math and computer workshops on Day Four—an intense yet exciting day filled with curiosity, learning, and coding conundrums.

Finally, the week ended on a heartwarming note—a relaxed social gathering with the program director, faculty, seniors, and the new cohort. Laughter echoed through the room as bonds formed. By the time classes began, we weren't just a group of students—we were a community.

Orientation Week became more than just an introduction—it became a celebration of beginnings, creating a foundation of friendships and support that often go missing in graduate programs. What a marvelous way to launch our academic pursuits!

A New Council Has Born

As the semester unfolded, change was in the air. A new batch meant a new ASCU Student Council. Just a month in, our seniors announced the much-anticipated elections.

With encouragement and genuine support, they pushed us to participate—to lead, to dream, and to make an impact. What followed was a whirlwind of brainstorming over coffee, designing campaign posters, and even friendly debates over weekend hangouts. Rivalries bloomed into friendships as candidates discussed visions and reached out to faculty for guidance.

Election day arrived, buzzing with anticipation. One after another, we shared our hopes and dreams for the cohort, and soon, the results were in:

  • President – Zixi Huang

  • Vice-President – Yash Mittal

  • Secretary – Khanyi Nawa

  • Treasurer – Dylan Crump (former), Pearika Chordia (present)

  • Social Chair and Public Relations – Philip Pantitanonta

  • Alumni Relations – Pearika Chordia

In true Columbia fashion, the outgoing board and faculty welcomed the new leadership with a celebratory dinner, marking a smooth and joyful transition of responsibility.
